Below is a selection of photos that showcase some of the charm and characteristics of Olde Norwich. Click on any picture for a bigger version.


Bishopsbridge. First mentioned in 1295 but built much earlier. An ancient map shows there was a bridge on this site in Roman Times.

The Hermitage, Bishopsgate, 1610. Once owned by the Cathedral Diocese.

Henry Bacon's House, Colegate. He was Sheriff in 1548 and Lord Mayor in 1557 & 1566 — rich Woolen/Worstead merchant.

Cow Tower. The only brick clad city wall tower was a tollhouse on the river and once a prison.

Octagon Chapel, Colegate. It was the largest Dome and first 8 sided building when built in 1756. Reformist Wesley copied it elsewhere in Britain.

Dragon Hall, King Street. (Museum and pick-up point.)

Music House, King Street. Oldest dwelling in Norwich, circa 1170.

Placque on wall of Bishopsgate, commemorating Lord Sheffield's demise in the Kett's rebellion in 1549.

Fresco of St. George & Dragon on wall of St. Gregory's Church, Pottergate/St. Benedicts Street. Approx 15ft tall and of 15th century origin, it wasn't discovered until 1861.The church is open as an arts & crafts centre daily 10 - 4. This is reputedly the oldest, largest & best preserved fresco in England!

Gurneys Bank, Bank Plain. The Gurneys were wealthy bankers/quakers. Elizabeth Fry, world famous for prison reform (on the back of English £5 note), was their daughter, her birthplace in Magdalen Street is on my tour route.

Bethel Hospital, the first mental hospital in the country founded by Mary Chapman in the 18th century.

Erpingham gate to cathedral near end of tour. Pick-up point.

Guildhall, City Hall, Gaol Hill. Pick-up & drop-off point alongside the largest open street market in the country.
 
Colman's (mustard) former pleasure wherry Hathor, moored alongside pulls ferry medieval water gate to cathedral.
